Not quite: In 1926, exactly one hundred years ago, Felizia Fischer from Vienna wanted to become a taxi driver. However, she was denied this because she was a woman.
But first things first: Fischer was convinced that women could drive cars just as well (or as poorly) as men. In 1925, she successfully passed her driving test and received her driver’s license. So she was allowed to drive cars—but not a taxi. Why? According to the so-called “Platzwagenlenkerdienst” (taxi driver service regulations), only men were allowed to practice the profession of taxi driver.
But giving up was not an option for Fischer. She brought the case before the Constitutional Court—and made history. On October 12, 1926, the judges ruled that excluding women from this profession violated the principle of equality. This marked the first time in the First Republic that an important ruling on gender equality was made.
Felizia Fischer thus became a pioneer, not only for all female taxi drivers but for the professional equality of women in Austria.
